We, the Holly Wood Mop Shots do
not need to tell you all the 2008
wildland fire season has started
and in some parts of the United
States, it has been furious. By
now the wildland crews are in
shape and geared up for what
could be along season, the big
question is are the structure guys
ready? Structure firefighters are in
shape for most structure fires they
respond to but put them in the
wildland arena and it is a different
story. Rehab does not happen
after one or two bottles of air; out
here, rehab may not happen for
hours. Structure firefighters are
very aggressive and operate in
high gear, which is great for in
town. Always remember, slow
down and take your time in the
wildland and please leave your
bunker gear at the station, its
wildland time not a structure fire.
Now for everyone we know that
you are always reminded safety
first and that is how it has to be.
Start with your PPE before you get
on the rig make sure you are
properly dressed, leather boots,
flame retardant pants and shirt,
gloves and hard hat, tuck-in the
shirt and roll your sleeves down.
Engine Bosses make sure
everyone is seat belted in before
the rig rolls out of the station. It
goes without saying the rig should
also be equipped with all the
necessary tools and gear, do not
forget to fill the tank. Respond to
the scene using caution for other
drivers and watch your speed,
speed kills, and the fire keeps
getting bigger. Give a good size
up, establish communications use
good tactics and remember your
LCES checklist. Take care of
yourself, your fellow firefighters
and come home to your family
when your job is finished.
Look up look down look all around;
see you at the big one
